Falling pregnant for many can be so easy, and yet for others, it is a complete headache and incredibly frustrating. Fertility problems affect one in six couples, and one in three when a woman is over 35 years old. Infertility is on the rise, and more than one percent of births in Australia involve the use of assisted reproductive technology. These increases may be due to couples deciding to have children later in life, or we could look at our personal demands and the high levels of stress that we subject ourselves to, and more importantly how we cope and manage our stress. Today the demands of juggling work, finances and parenting, puts enormous pressure on couples.
As a practitioner working with fertility, I have found that reducing stress and maintaining a clear calm state of mind not only improves your health but dramatically increases the chances of a successful pregnancy. Stress plays a critical role in our ability to fall pregnant. The relationship between stress and infertility is complex; however, the benefits of relaxation are now becoming more widely accepted.
Our thoughts and feelings create chemicals that are released within our body, and by looking more closely at the stress response, we understand that in situations of ongoing stress, increased levels of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol affect the body’s natural biochemical balance. The part of our brain that regulates the stress response also regulates our sex hormones, and any imbalance in our thinking and feeling can directly impact on the reproductive system, and the delicate balance of hormones required for conception.
You have probably heard that meditation and relaxation can help you de-stress and unwind. What is less well known is that Hypnotherapy also helps you achieve those same benefits but also works to reduce anxiety. Regularly being in a relaxed state creates physiological changes that reduce stress.
Working with couples, I am able to help them access that relaxation response, look at any limiting beliefs that may be holding them back from falling pregnant, and teach them real tools to relax their mind and body, so that their body regains the balance it needs for conception.
