The Medical Sanctuary Holistic Medical Centre

Aromatherapy is so much more than you might have first expected. This is a holistic therapy using extracts and essential oils in a variety of ways to increase wellbeing and support better health. Aromatherapy blends are reliable treatments for cold and flu symptoms during winter. The Medical Sanctuary Aromatherapist, Kyah Alders, has created two versatile cold and flu winter essential oil blends for you to use at home. These blends can be used in any of the ways discussed in this article.

Essential oils have antiviral and immune-stimulating properties that help to ease the debilitating effects of flu and the common cold. They are well suited to treating the respiratory system by inhalation, and many standard chest rubs include oils such as eucalyptus or menthol, camphor, thymol and other components derived from essential oils. Chest rubs work by vapors rising up with the heat of your body, then being inhaled into the nasal passages and lungs to help suppress coughing. Their analgesic effect also helps to reduce the pain associated with coughs and colds.

j0337398[1]_1As soon as you feel the symptoms of a cold invading your body, run a warm bath and add either of The Medical Sanctuary winter blends of essential oil to the water. While you soak, breathe in the aromas of the oils to relax your body and clear your nasal passages. If you can, go to bed immediately after your bath for a good deep sleep – rest will do wonders at the early stages or on set of a cold or flu.

Where a cold or flu has already set in to your body, try a steam inhalation. Simply fill a bowl with steaming hot water and put a few drops of the Sanctuary cold and flu blend on to the water. Lean over the bowel with a towel over your head and inhale deeply for about 15 minutes giving the vapors time to coat the inner linings of your nose, throat and lungs. Best results are made if you can repeat this three times a day. (do not use inhalation methods if you are asthmatic.)

Beneficial effects can be gained by adding a few drops of the blend to an oil burner filling the room with soothing vapors, easing your cough and clearing congestion.

Either follow the recipes provided or contact The Medical Sanctuary and we will blend the essential oils for you.
